| Before the advent of this part of Germany as GDR, the productive landscape of Rügen was widely based on the territorial control offered by the Guts, the baltic counterpart to the andalousian Cortijo or the english Manor. Our project deals with the renovation of three of these abandoned Manors around the lake Tetzitz, a project that begins without a fixed road map. The biggest and most valuable of these Guts is Tetzit, where we have already began the renovation works, under the monitoring of the local and regional government as a national heritage site in the limits of a nature reserve.
The first step of the development of the Project lies on the acknowledgement of the common grounds that every Gut shares, a Manor house, some wooded areas and agriculture buildings supporting farmland, and a park/garden for the private use of the owner. It seems obvious nowadays, as for any Heritage renovation, that the historical and material context has to be taken deeply into account. But when one have to deal with Landscaping and Agriculture pre-existing conditions, nothing arbitrary lies there, every single element has a meaning and a purpose. Maybe they are long ago forgotten, but it is part of our task to uncover them. In the case of the built Heritage, the connection between the meaning and the materiality is unavoidable.
This task is neither contemplative nor only analytical, because our position when working on Heritage is not about preserving the harvest, it is mostly about sowing the land.
In the case of Tetzitz, the ditches enclose different areas, including the private garden, as a measure of protection towards the close Baltic Sea, as well as providing drainage to maintain the productive or decorative plantations. When working on the landscape, we are convinced that the water infrastructures are the core areas of any landscape architect ´s logical reasoning, and that it is worthwile to do some mental work on it.
Along with uncovering how it organizes the land, we attach to this wet perimeter multiple tasks within its own renovation, like the new edge pedestrian circuits, or a renovated physical configuration that takes into considerationt its rol as the archetypal perceptive artifice of the Landscape, the Ha-Ha.
